Tumani Diabaté

Pazo da Cultura. 21:00 h.

Tumani Diabaté

The kora is a kind of harp from West Africa that has twenty-one strings, and Toumani Diabaté is able to play it without problem. He was born in the seventies in Bamako (Mali), he is son of the musician Sidiki Kiabaté and he is descendant of the great performers, more than seventy before him. Nowadays Toumanio Diabaté is one of the best virtuosos playing the kora. Rebellious and heterodox, he is, however, the best ambassador of musical tradition of his country. Like the griots of African tribes, ancient storytellers who wove the community with the word, Toumani played with Symmetric Orchestra, a tool for going beyond the borders. He shows us his last disk The Mande Variations with his new group.

The Residents

Pazo da Cultura. 21:00 h.

The Residents

They are here because they had never gone. They are a group of musicians and anonymous video makers because their ideological program has change nothing since The Third Reich’n’Roll (1996). This may be the reason for which The Residents continue questioning the pop like an artefact of the cultural contemporaneous market. Now they attack again with The Bunny Boy, an album, a figure, a series from internet, a conceptual alibi and a scene which neither is music in direct, nor theatre, nor video art. After publishing sixty disks, The Residents continue in the music scene. This is the first world tour since several years.

Like fallen angels, Madame Bérénice de la Trouffinière and Madame Culnégonde de la Garde Montée suddenly wake up in the change of millennium surrounded with popular contemporaneous sounds from the punk to the disco or to the hard rock after 257 years and three months frozen in some lost place in The Alps. These followers of Bach, fascinating, adapt all that they like to their lyric register from XVIII century and they begin to go through streets, squares, theatres and coffees around the world with their ukulele taking possession of The Clash, of Abba or of AC DC. If The Sex Pistols sang opera, they would sound like them.

Stereolab

Pazo da Cultura. 21:00 h.

Stereolab

Between the pop and the experimentation, halfway between the savoir faire and the search for new dangers, the Brithish Band Stereolab has been for more than fifteen years uncomfortably in the avant-garde, swinging with lucidity among the krautrock, the bossa ant the lounge. Their recent album Chemical Chords (2008), first album in four years and eleventh in their prolific work, put them again in the same position that they had reached with titles so emblematic from popular contemporaneous music like the Emperor Tomato Ketchup which they published in 1996 which is treaty about rhythm with a happy end. This is a waited return.
